Kanban method: Development
Kanban was originally developed for the Japanese Toyota Motor Corporation by Taiichi Ōhno, as their production figures were lagging behind their American competitors. Instead of traditional production for stock, only actual demand now determined the production steps – thus enabling maximum efficiency and flexibility.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the method was further developed into an agile change management approach, thus enabling the optimization of software development processes. Today, Kanban is used in every conceivable industry and business area to visualize and noticeably improve workflow.
Kanban Principles and Practices
The Kanban method primarily prioritizes workflow efficiency. To achieve this, existing processes are broken down into work steps and recorded on the Kanban board. Work-in-progress (WIP) limits prevent employee overload. During Kanban reviews, the results are jointly evaluated and suggestions for improvement are made. Customers are also heavily involved, as the entire Kanban process is tailored to their needs. Therefore, in addition to workflow efficiency, service quality also plays a crucial role.
The method is successfully used in a wide variety of companies because Kanban boards can be adapted to diverse needs. It is also frequently combined with Scrum to achieve optimal results. Especially in software development, Scrumban is therefore synonymous with an optimal and productive way of working.
Fully exploit the potential of the Kanban method through proper presentation.
The key to successfully implementing Kanban is involving your entire team.
