5S is a Japanese concept for optimizing work processes, in which production, work, and the work environment are cleaned, structured, and organized. Often, work efficiency in ordinary work processes is limited and can be improved because, for example, responsibilities are not clearly defined, time is wasted searching and waiting, or needed items are not readily available.

The five S's stand for the corresponding Japanese terms Seiri (sort), Seiton (create order), Seiso (clean), Seiketsu (standardize), and Shitsuke (self-discipline), which name and explain the individual action steps. Through precisely defined action steps, production sites and workplaces are made more efficient, and processes are optimized.
