What is OGSM?

OGSM stands for Objectives, Goals, Strategy, and Measures and is a method for strategic planning and goal achievement. The OGSM method helps its users define appropriate goals and choose the right path to achieve them. It ensures not only that the right goals are set, but also that all stakeholders understand how the goals will be achieved and which measures should be planned and implemented. OGSM is a comprehensive approach: A long-term vision is broken down into small, quantitative goals, which are then linked to concrete strategies, measures, and key performance indicators (KPIs) for monitoring progress.

OGSM and OKR – a complete package?

OGSM and OKR are two different approaches to achieving major business objectives. The OKR method breaks down long-term strategies into smaller, short-term goals, whereas OGSM establishes a long-term plan for achieving these goals. The two approaches are fundamentally different, yet despite their differences, they can be combined to create a comprehensive strategy. OGSM provides a long-term, overarching plan that is implemented top-down. OKR can make the OGSM method, which has a planning horizon of one to five years, more flexible. OKRs also allow time for shorter-term goals, problems, and strategies. Furthermore, OKR introduces a bottom-up component to the OGSM method, giving employees more control over their work.

How is OGSM applied?

The OGSM method can be easily applied using an OGSM plan or canvas. The first step involves a preliminary analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the target market and the company. Based on this analysis, an objective aligned with the company's vision and mission is defined. To achieve this objective, smaller goals are set, which are then linked to appropriate strategies, measures, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
