Practical tip: Insert symbols using autocorrect rules

|Tom Schweitzer
Anyone who frequently uses symbols that aren't part of the standard German keyboard layout knows the problem well: The tedious manual insertion via the menu structure slows down the workflow. Custom autocorrect rules can solve this problem. We'll show you how. Especially in technical or scientific professions, it's common to need to use symbols that, while part of the Unicode character set, can't be easily entered via keyboard shortcuts. By associating these characters with a specific string, you can access them much more quickly. This saves valuable time when writing text for your presentations. Here's how to add new autocorrect rules:
  1. First, copy the desired symbol to the clipboard (CTRL + C). You can copy it from another source or add it from the list of available symbols using the "Symbol" button under the "Paste" tab.
  2. Go to the "File" tab, then to "Options" and then to "Document Proofing". Click the "AutoCorrect Options" button.
  3. In the window that now opens, enter the symbol in the field under "With:". In the "Replace:" field, enter the desired string that should henceforth be replaced by the symbol.
  4. Click "Add" and then "OK" to save the settings.
Make sure to choose a string of characters that you can easily remember so that you can use the rule as easily as possible.
