PowerPoint: How to change the vertical chart axis

|Tom Schweitzer

You've created a chart in a PowerPoint document and want to assign new minimum and maximum scale values to the vertical axis, also known as the quantity axis? Our tutorial shows you how!

When creating a chart, the minimum and maximum values are pre-set on the vertical axis by default. Normally, the axis values adjust to the data you enter into the chart. However, you might want to enter values that significantly exceed the pre-set height of the vertical axis, for example, with data in the millions or billions. In some charts, this can lead to visual anomalies.

This tutorial will show you how to manually set a fixed minimum and maximum value for the scaling of the vertical axis in just a few steps.

Step 1:

  • Create a chart using the "Insert" tab. Then, under "Illustrations," click "Chart." Enter your data into the Excel spreadsheet that opens. Close the spreadsheet. Your chart will now appear on the desired slide.
  • If you already have a pre-made diagram from the PresentationLoad online shop, open it and insert it into the desired slide.

Step 2:

Select your diagram by clicking on it with the left mouse button.

Step 3:

In the “Chart Layouts” field, click on “Layout”.

Step 4:
