How to design PowerPoint presentations correctly – color scheme

|Tom Schweitzer

When designing a presentation, choosing the right colors plays a crucial role. Our perception of color determines the mood that is visually communicated. In this article, we explain how to find the right color scheme for your presentation.

When developing the concept for your presentation, you should always keep in mind how the actual presentation situation will unfold. What mood do you expect from the audience? What emotional message should your presentation convey? These and similar questions can help you find the right color scheme for your presentation. An important design tool is the so-called color wheel, a tool from color theory that helps you find the best possible color tones and color schemes.

Colors and what they communicate
The visual perception of color evokes certain emotions and feelings. Here are some terms and moods that we associate with certain colors:

  • Red: Passion, anger, speed
  • Yellow: Friendliness, youth, joy
  • Green: Nature, growth, balance
  • Blue: Knowledge, trust, security
  • White: Purity, peace, virtue
  • Black: Luxury, secrecy, formality

Monochrome color scheme
A monochrome color scheme uses a base color that is employed in various shades, such as different shades of gray. This creates a very harmonious look that works well for very factual presentations.

Complementary colors
Complementary colors are located opposite each other on the color wheel. Such a color scheme appears very vibrant and is well-suited for setting strong accents. This is particularly suitable for presentations that are intended to have a very energizing tone.

Triadic color scheme
The triadic color scheme uses three colors that are equidistant from each other on the color wheel. With this type of design, it's important that the colors are used in a balanced way. This can be achieved, for example, by using one color as the primary color and the other two for accents.

Analogous color scheme
In an analogous color scheme, two colors in different shades are used that are directly next to each other on the color wheel. This creates a design that allows for a certain degree of variation without visually overwhelming the viewer through strong contrasts.
