Mirroring a PowerPoint image - Here's the easiest way!

|Tom Schweitzer

PowerPoint offers various ways to mirror images, objects, and text. Mirroring can serve pragmatic, layout-related purposes, or it can be used as a deliberate visual distraction to draw attention. Here you will learn how to mirror a PowerPoint image.

Mirroring images in PowerPoint

A PowerPoint presentation thrives on the diverse elements of its slide layout. Key elements include text and images. When these are inserted, Microsoft Office PowerPoint offers a wide range of functions. Images and text should complement each other to help the viewer understand a topic. Images offer greater visual variety than walls of text. Images should reinforce the text's message and clarify content, but should never distract too much from the text.

To make a PowerPoint slide appear harmonious, it may be necessary to mirror images or text in certain places. Images and shapes can be mirrored both vertically and horizontally. With a few simple tricks, you can also achieve all mirroring directions for text.

After the reflection has been created, you can add the finishing touches to the reflection by selecting a style effect. This allows you to create more original and artistic presentations for your audience.

In this article, we will explain how to…

  • Images and shapes reflect
  • Changing the orientation of an image
  • Changing the direction of pictograms such as arrows
  • Flip text vertically or turn it upside down

Horizontal reflections, as the name suggests, occur along the horizontal axis (y-axis). This allows people in images to change their sideways gaze. Pictograms, such as arrows, can then point in the opposite direction. This makes the presentation visually more accessible and sparks the viewer's curiosity.

Text can also be vertically mirrored or flipped upside down . This type of mirroring occurs along the vertical axis (x-axis). For example, you can vertically mirror the title of your presentation to draw attention to it. Alternatively, you might have a logo with text that you want to mirror to create a desired effect.

This article includes not only a detailed step-by-step guide on mirroring PowerPoint images, but also simple instructions that you can easily follow using your mouse. We'll guide you from inserting the image to the finished mirroring process in PowerPoint.

Do you have a portrait image on your computer that you want to insert into your PowerPoint slide? When inserting it into the presentation, do you notice that the person in the image is looking out of the page and not facing the center of the slide? Then it's time to learn about the different mirroring techniques in and with PowerPoint.

In this section, we'll show you how to change the viewing direction and position of an image. The advantage is that the slide layout remains unchanged; only the image is edited. You can achieve this in just a few steps using PowerPoint's "horizontal mirroring" feature . This guide will show you how.

Step by step:

Step 1:

Go to the desired slide in PowerPoint where you want to insert an image (such as a portrait).

Step 2:

You can find the " Pictures" button on the "Insert" tab; select it. Using "This device…", you can browse to the desired image in the folder and insert it into the PowerPoint file by clicking "Open" .

You can also mirror an image without using the "Image Format" tab. To do this, use a simple trick directly on the inserted graphic. For horizontal mirroring, proceed as follows:

Step 1:

Select the desired item by left-clicking.

Step 2:

Use your mouse to scan the corners of the image area until you find a handle point (also called an anchor point ).

Select one of the anchor points and hold down the left mouse button to click and drag it. To mirror the image, drag the anchor point to the opposite horizontal anchor point on the other side of the image.

Your image now appears perfectly mirrored horizontally. This allows you to mirror any image in PowerPoint to perfectly match your slide layout.

Symbols, shapes, and PowerPoint graphics reflect

Pictograms are a popular tool for presenting key findings or relationships more clearly and memorably within a PowerPoint presentation. You can freely choose pictograms from the fields of analysis, technology and electronics, people, communication, and many more. Clear geometric shapes can connect or differentiate concepts; arrow shapes represent directions more clearly than spelled-out words.

Unfortunately, some PowerPoint icons are not available in all orientations and may need to be mirrored . Here we'll show you how to do that. In this example, we'll mirror an arrow horizontally to change its direction.

Mirror or flip PowerPoint text

First, you need to know that text cannot be mirrored using the standard PowerPoint method . The "flip vertically" option simply flips the text upside down, but doesn't mirror it – and "flip horizontally" does nothing at all. Only text embedded within graphics or shapes can be mirrored as a whole.

For standalone texts, you can achieve the desired effect by rotating them along the corresponding X or Y axis. Here's how:

Mirror text in PowerPoint with rotation

Step 2:
