Isolating an object in PowerPoint: Making an image jump out of the frame - A great design effect!

|Tom Schweitzer

Most images in presentations are clearly defined by four distinct edges separating them from the background or PowerPoint slide. To stand out from the crowd of standard images, we'd like to show you how to break up these edges, isolate your photo or object, and make it more visually appealing.

The idea is simple: an object in the image should be partially isolated and appear to jump out of the frame. This suddenly makes the image appear three-dimensional and more interactive than before. In this article, we'll show you how to isolate objects and make images jump out of the frame !

PowerPoint: Isolate an object and make it jump out of the image frame

You do n't need any additional software to isolate an object. You can easily create the effect with Microsoft Office PowerPoint. The object isolation effect works with a simple trick.

Two identical images are superimposed and processed individually : In one image, the object is cut out and the rest of the background is deleted. The image on top is cropped horizontally to define the point on the edge where the object should jump out of the image frame.

Step-by-step tutorial: How to isolate an object and make it jump out of the image frame

  1. Insert the image onto your PowerPoint slide. The quickest way to do this is by dragging and dropping , or alternatively via the " Insert " tab. There, click on " Pictures " and then locate the image on your computer using " This device... " to insert it.
  2. Once you click on the image on your slide, the " Image Format " tab will appear at the top of the image. Select " Selection Pane " to open it.

  3. The selection area lists all elements on the slide. In this case, name your image something like "Background".
  4. Duplicate the image by selecting it and then pressing Ctrl + D on your keyboard. Position the duplicate so that it is perfectly aligned with the image you named "Background". You can then rename the duplicate to " Object " in the selection pane, as shown in our example.

  5. Make sure the duplicated image named "Object" is positioned above the "Background" image in the selection pane. Now, deactivate the child image "Background" by clicking the small eye icon next to its name in the selection pane. You can now edit the other image ("Object") individually.
  6. Click on the image in the slide and reopen the " Picture Format " tab. Then, select " Crop ." PowerPoint will automatically suggest an object to crop. You can manually refine the crop. Use the markers at the top of the image to "keep" or "remove" areas.
