Whether using PowerPoint or a flipchart – what actually makes a good presentation? In this interview, we let the successful and well-known speaker, author, and trainer Hans-Uwe L. Köhler have his say. The expert reveals what's important and what the LoveSeller concept is all about.
You are a speaker, trainer, and author. What fascinates you about your profession as a speaker?
It's a privilege to share your thoughts with an audience. And if you then manage to inspire people with your ideas, it's almost perfect. The ultimate goal, however, is the opportunity to make a difference and make the world a better place!
What techniques can be used to captivate an audience?
This may not sound particularly original at first, but your own enthusiasm is actually the key!
Remember Augustine's saying: "...You must burn yourself..."
“…if you want to ignite others!” This sentence perfectly encapsulates the transmission of enthusiasm.
For many people, however, it is extremely difficult to inspire themselves!
This is a very particular problem! The capacity for enthusiasm is actually present in almost everyone – just observe small children and how they are – however, this very capacity is buried in many people over time. Therefore, it is essential to rediscover this intrinsic capacity – incidentally, a central theme of my lectures.
What role does storytelling play in a presentation?
Storytelling is an ancient human art! Until the invention of printing, narrative was the only way to convey complex information. Just think of Homer: a blind man recounting the adventures of King Odysseus in the marketplace—imagine that today! In short: good speakers are always good storytellers!

What should beginners absolutely pay attention to when presenting?
Three things:
- Not everything needs to be said – less is more!
- Those who are afraid of making mistakes cannot achieve a great victory!
- It doesn't matter if you're right, the audience has to believe you!
How do you prepare for a presentation?
Meticulous. For my first presentation, I invested an entire workday for every minute of the presentation! And I still do that today! That's why impromptu speeches are truly spontaneous and free – the only thing that helps is a willingness to fail, otherwise it wouldn't work.
What constitutes a successful conclusion to a presentation for you?
That's a really interesting question because it touches on one of the most important aspects of any speech: the conclusion! It's not just the content that determines the impact of a speech, but also the answer to the question: "What state should the audience be in when you've finished your speech?"
Tell us about your exciting concept: "Selling is like love!"
The central message is brilliant: Anyone who can fall in love can also sell! I use the behavior of a loving couple as a metaphor to illustrate the act of buying in a simple way. My aim in this story is to make the ability to sell as easy as possible.
How does the LoveSeller concept differ from all other concepts?
The crucial point is that I recommend selling entirely without pressure, relying solely on the power of attraction. In fact, you don't even need to sell at all; it would be perfectly sufficient simply not to prevent the "buying" process!
