Using image captions correctly in PowerPoint – text boxes and readability

|Tom Schweitzer
With the right image captions, you can communicate more effectively in your presentations and reach your audience better. These simple tips will help you create visually appealing and functional captions for images in your presentations. The strategic use of image and text combinations is essential for adding impact to your presentations. Image captions, especially on title and chapter slides, are a great way to create visual anchors and capture the audience's attention. PowerPoint offers several interesting options for effectively displaying text over an image. The following tips are easy to implement, even for inexperienced users.

Place text directly on the image:

The easiest way is to place a text box directly over the inserted image. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the desired image into your presentation. To do this, first click on the "Insert" tab, then on the "Pictures" field. In the following window, select the image.
  2. Under the "Insert" tab, select the "Text Box" option and place the text box in the appropriate position in the image.
  3. Enter your desired text. Using the functions under "Drawing Tools," which you'll see when the text field is selected, you can adjust the font size, color, etc.

Tips for better readability:

To make it easy for the audience to follow the presentation, you should ensure that the text is always clearly legible and easy to read. The following settings will help with this:
  1. If the image is too bright, too dark, or visually cluttered, adjust the hue or saturation. To do this, select the image and click the "Color" button in the "Picture Tools" menu. From the menu, you can choose a suitable preset or adjust the settings in detail under "Picture Color Options...".
  2. You can also place a transparent shape over the image. Under "Insert," click the "Shapes" button, select a suitable shape, and drag it over the image. Right-click the shape and select "Format Shape." In the panel on the right, you can adjust the shape's transparency to modify the image accordingly.
Even with these basics, you can effectively showcase your images and text in your presentations. In the next article, we'll introduce you to some original methods for adding text to images in PowerPoint and creating striking visual effects.
