What is OGSM?
OGSM stands for "Objectives, Goals, Strategy and Measures". It is a strategic-planning and goal-setting framework. The OGSM framework supports its users in defining relevant goals and taking the path to achieve them. It also ensures that all stakeholders know which measures will be planned and implemented to achieve these goals. OGSM is comprehensive: A long-term objective is broken down into small quantitative goals. These are in turn linked to concrete strategies, measures and metrics for oversight.
OGSM and OKR: A complete package?
OGSM and OKR are two different approaches to achieving overarching business objectives. The OKR framework breaks down long-term strategies into smaller short-term goals. OGSM, on the other hand, establishes a long-term plan for achieving the objective. Despite their fundamental differences, the two approaches can be used together to create a holistic strategy. OGSM provides a long-term, overarching plan. OKR brings more flexibility to an OGSM strategy that has a planning period of one to five years. As a result, OKR provides time to address shorter-term goals, issues and strategies. OGSM has a top-down approach. OKR supplements OGSM with a bottom-up component, giving employees more control over their work.
How is OGSM used?
The OGSM framework is easily implemented using an OGSM plan or an OGSM canvas. The first step is to perform a preliminary analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the target market and company. This is used to define an objective that matches the company’s vision and mission. Smaller goals are set in order to achieve this objective, and these are linked to suitable strategies, measures and metrics. OGSM summarizes the entire road map to achieving the objective in just a few pages.
