What is the Ikigai philosophy of life?

Ikigai, the Japanese philosophy of life, means “reason for being” or “value of life.” At its core, it’s about finding meaning in daily life and having an inner drive that makes life worth living. This fulfillment can come from a variety of sources, such as personal passions, relationships, hobbies or activities that bring joy and satisfaction. Although the core idea still exists, Western interpretations have changed the original concept of Ikigai. An example of this is the Ikigai diagram by Marc Winn.

What is Marc Winn’s Ikigai diagram?

Marc Winn’s Ikigai diagram is a Western interpretation of the traditional Japanese Ikigai philosophy. In his blog, Winn combined the idea of Ikigai and the well-known Venn diagram of purpose and called it the Ikigai diagram. It focuses on four circles: what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs and what you can be paid for. Following the form of a Venn diagram, the intersection of these four circles represents the individual’s purpose in life – their ikigai. Marc Winn’s approach combines personal passion, professional skills, social contribution and financial reward to achieve a holistic and fulfilling lifestyle.

How is Ikigai used in business?

In a corporate context, Ikigai is used to increase employee satisfaction, motivation and productivity. Companies use the Ikigai diagram to empower employees to work in roles that utilize their passions and skills. At the same time, they contribute to the company’s mission and goals. For entrepreneurs, the Ikigai diagram is particularly effective in developing business ideas and strategies. By combining personal passions and strengths with market needs and financial factors, entrepreneurs can build meaningful and successful businesses. Ikigai facilitates a fulfilling work environment that supports innovation and long-term success.
